1000 day

Anyway, the cute little 3lin asked for a post about how we met. I have answered this quickly before on my tumblr, but since my blog is so ‘small’ I figure everyone who reads it already knows lol

But since this ~*~cool number~*~ anniversary passed, I’m just going to do this sort of post for the hell of it!

Ahem. Today, it’s been 1019 days. We’ve known each other for about four years! Keunseok came to my university in September of 2008 to study abroad for a year. About half of our relationship has been long distance. I’d like to say we are proof that long distance is hard but not impossible, but I won’t be that arrogant. I know we are happy right now and glad the both of us worked hard to figure this out.

Going to be honest: I had a boyfriend for most of the time he was there in the states. However, Keunseok & I didn’t start dating officially until after I visited him in Korea and, by then, months after I had broke up with my then-bf. I won’t go into details about that or anything else related to the topic 

So anyway, when he arrived what I thought was happening between us was just a really good friendship. HAHA.

He was 24 when he arrived (now 28) and hadn’t gotten his LASIK surgery yet, so he wore glasses all the time. Keunseok was roommates with one of my friend’s then-boyfriends, which is the main reason I hung out with him all the time (at the beginning). He was also one of the few Korean exchange students to actively avoid hanging out with other Korean exchange students, which helped. 

Halloween of 2008, I made up a lot of my friends into different animals. Keunseok was a snow leopard. LOL @ ME 

It would take until about April or May of 2009 for me to realize the things I felt for him were more than just “I love you as a friend, bro”. I confessed in an way and Keunseok wasn’t quite sure what to do. He did assure me the feelings were mutual, and that he had liked me since last fall, but had ignored it because I wasn’t single. Sweet

Post-confession, pre-dating at a concert. I didn’t look that happy because I was watching the lostprophets up close, I promise you.

So I went and visited him in Korea in 2009  for two months, staying with his family in Busan. I knew no Korean beyond “I’m hungry!”  Official start of our relationship (as per his wishes) was the day I arrived. Once I left, long distance started and it sucked. 

Winter of 2009/2010, lots of stress was relieved when he got a job at Hyundai, which is where he still works.

I spent all of my money on a trip to visit him during my spring break of 2010 while he paid for my hostel and almost everything else. 

I was majoring in Chinese and had plans to study in Taiwan, but things ended up being that my advisor and the only Chinese teacher at my uni was going to leave following this year. She helped me change my major to Asian Studies and I ended up choosing to study at Ewha the following school year.

Summer of 2010, before I actually began the ‘study’ of the ‘study abroad’; I had arrived a month early just because I could Obviously being in Korea for a full year made us both super happy.

May of 2011, 1 year ago, nearing the end of my study abroad experience.

For his 1 week of vacation in August, he came back with me to the states.

It took me another quarter of online classes and then two more months of just waiting for me to come back to Korea. And now, here I am: a kindergarden-elementary English/Science teacher in Suwon. Probably because I was stupid in love, he did influence more than one big decision in my life. Not completely, but he did. I don’t regret it thus far, and we’re pretty much really super happy and content with each other. Take that as you will.

I expect this to last for about five more days, when it will be rainy season for way too long.

I’m trying to enjoy it while it’s here, though. Taking short walks on lunch, leaving early for work to walk there slowly, walking home even more sloooowly

The area I live is inconvenient as far as being close to Seoul goes, but it really is a nice place. I live in a market, and can walk out of my apartment into cheap food, restaurants and a cute little park is a stone’s throw away.

Studying. Keunseok is going to take the TOPIK again to see where his English level is at. I am, as expected, studying Korean. Really, Keunseok’s speaking level is so high (we never have communication issues, his English is so good ) I think he is going to do very well on the test.

It rained this past weekend, so we played a lot of Leauge of Legends. I’ve finally decided to focus on Graves, but I’m still so awful on the 5vs5 Today I started to read up on how other people play him. Coincidence that this past month, there was a pentakill in the OGA Korean tournament, which became ~*~famous~*~ in the LoL fandom because of the way the Korean announcers were freaking out. PENTAKEEEEEEEEEEEL!!!!11! Just like Starcraft in Korea, LoL has a channel on TV that plays tournaments/games/etc, so they’ve been re-playing that game pretty often.

This is the best jeon I’ve had at a restaurant thus far in my experiences of eating restaurant-jeon. It. Is. Amazing. It is right near my work place, too, so……  Yes, lots of eating it to be in the near future It is just perfectly crunchy but soft inside, and the taste in general is amazing I don’t even need to dip it in soy sauce.

 I’ve also recently really been into League of Legends  Unfortunately for all my LoL friends I know of, I’m on the Korean server   I play at PC방 because even if the game still worked on my Mac, I don’t know if my MacBook could handle it  If you do play AND are on the Korean server, however, my username for that is kimsih I mostly play Morgana, Ahri and Tristana. I am so bad at any character who isn’t ranged

 Since both Keunseok & I really only get 1 full week of vacation time during the same week everyone else in Korea gets their vacation (1st week of August) we wanted to buy our plane tickets to wherever we wanted to go ASAP. I’m going to be planning the whole thing and decided upon Thailand as our destination If anyone has experiences they’d like to share to help me plan this trip, I’d appreciate it! We have 6~ days, and we managed to throw in a 1 day layover in Taipei

Last weekend I went to Jindo with Sonia for the Sea Parting Festival. Once a year, the sea parts just perfectly at Jindo island to make a land-bridge so people can walk to another island. Because I was just wearing crosstrainers, I didn’t actually walk across the land bridge 

We did, however, enjoy some corn And later that evening enjoyed some pink makkeolli.

Jindo is also the name of the 100% purely Korean Dog  It’s touted as being super intelligent, very loyal to it’s owner and strong. I believe all these things, because trainers try to get the Jindo to become a police dog within the States. The only reason it fails is because it’s really only loyal to one person, and it always wants to dominate all the other dogs/animals it is around.  Or something like that. Also, we got to see this particular, beautiful Jindo do some great stunts, including jumping through a hoop that was probably a foot in diameter. /doglover

So far I really like my job! I don’t go “uuuughu~ ” in the mornings when I wake up and know I have to work. I enjoy it a lot. Have I been specific about it before? I mostly teach science to kindergarteners and elementary students. Occasionally I teach English-y things, but our school is trying to imitate an international school in that we teach the students regular subjects as if they had a very good grasp of English. To be honest, I’m NOT intuitively very good at teaching English, if the few classes where I teach english writing/reading has anything to say. I’m far better at teaching science and subjects that are extremely ’fact’ based (who doesn’t love science!?!?!). It is also very rewarding seeing the look of “I GET IT!!!! ” on the students’ faces! Especially awarding because not only are the understanding new concepts, they are understanding it in another language~

Keunseok fixing my drain The smell in my apartment is coming from my bathroom, so I think it has everything to do with the drain system. If I keep my bathroom door closed, the rest of my apartment smells fine. It helps that, by cooking, food smells overtake any slight bad smell!

To top off the “new things”, Keunseok bought me a new phone! My old Optimus Q was running really slowly. Though I loved the QWERTY slide-out keyboard, I knew it was time to give it up. The age of BIG SCREEN!!! is here and I wanted to partake! My new phone is a SKY Vega LTE M  The “M” means it has motion sensors, so once I can use the front camera as a motion sensor to flip through certain things on the phone. TBH I don’t use that very much, but my older students always want to play with it~

The homescreen design is a bit different now, and I have a mint jelly case as well as my old pink Choo Choo Kitty phone strap, so it looks very “sweet”~

First outfit snap?? I keep forgetting to take them!!! But, really, my outfits aren’t too ~*~special~*~ I am still able to dress how I want, because the work dress code I have isn’t strict at all. But my new style is still finding itself. I’m waiting until spring hits to do more shopping  Especially for more SHOES, I was able to bring so few

The youngest class we have is of four little 3.5/4 year old kids (Korean age 5). This is Judy and Aileen; they get English names while at the school, either given by us, their parents or chosen by themselves (resulting in names like Red, Todiboo and Tiara ). This baby class (called “Venus“) spoke zero English when they came, but their baby brains are picking up things so quickly, I LOVE teaching them . Here we made frogs-cups that “jumped”.

These two girls call me 언니. Cute, and I apprecaite that I’m just “older sister” instead of “adjuma”, they don’t quite realize I’m their teacher, not just someone fun to play with. They’re the older of the four, and are quite bossy, but still too adorable.

Victor (I WILL get a better pic of him) and Cosmo. Victor is the youngest, but is our little ”adjeossi” (middle-aged man). Cosmo is 2nd youngest, but is the most “baby” by far. He cried the first few days. The type of baby-cry that is like “I don’t realize I’m crying but I’m so shocked my mom isn’t here IDK WHAT TO DO!!11!”  He has gotten used to us by now, though.

Everyone has at least 1 class they teach every day. Otherwise, we rotate and teach them each 2 times a week. My class is 5 of the lowest level-English, highest-grade Kindergarten we have, called “Mercury“. Mathew (left) is the most ornery of them, but all 5 are pretty ornery. They just aren’t BAD, they just don’t realize they need to pay attention and stop talking. They’ve already improved so much in the 3 weeks I’ve been teaching them, and regardless of their attitudes they really do TRY, so I love them.

In contrast, the room my desk is in is shared with the highest level, highest-grade Kindergarten class we have, called “Pluto“. Obviously I interact with Pluto and Mercury every day, then. Connie (right) is in Pluto. This photo is from a birthday party we had. I like seeing all the kids interact in both languages, since they’re too young to really have their personalities change when they switch languages. Mathew is still obnoxiously outgoing no matter where he is, and Connie a little strange.

During lunch, Eve (left), myself and Megan (right) typically leave. We’re trying to pack our own lunches more often now, but here we are in the elevator going off to take a break from the children-voices we hear 8~9hrs a day.

떡볶이 (ok, more like 라볶이 here), one of my favorite Korean foods. WHO DOESN’T LIKE THIS STUFF??? 

Last week, we went on a field trip  To a children’s museum. Everyone typically looks after their every-day class along with the Korean teacher who is always in their classroom. For my class, Mercury, the Korean teacher has two classes, so I watched after them with my boss (whose English name is Monica, but I haven’t quite learned her Korean name……. ).

This is Emily. Very precious, the worst English in the class, but her excuse is the most legit (lukemia, needs to go to the hospital often). She copies the other students and me very well, and is ornery in her own little way, so I love her spirit.

One of the first exhibits had to do with water-related things, so of course that meant the kids ran around the rest of the museum in different states of wet.

And I don’t usually like to end on sad notes, but as it is my blog, I want to do this. My mom gave me all this news via Kakaotalk (IM app we use to chat on our phones).

Three weeks ago, my paternal grandmother had a minor heart-attack. She has recovered, thankfully. However, a few days after that, my maternal grandmother had a stroke. It has changed her personality, but she is still functioning very well. The idea that my grandma is a “different” person is so shocking, I can’t think about it without feeling upset. On top of that, about a week and a half after my grandma’s stroke, my uncle (her son, my mother’s older brother) had a heart-attack. Uncle Jim gained consciousness briefly before falling into a coma and never woke up. He was pronounced brain dead and they took him off life support last Wednesday night.

Uncle Jim, rest in peace. I hope you felt loved in life and I hope you know that you are still remembered even now.

I am so glad I spent a lot of time with both sides of my family before I left, especially with both grandmothers. I was very emotional at point this weekend. I worry about my mother; thankfully she changed jobs back to one she knows she loves (Starbucks manager). I worry about being in a different country and if something happens to my parents or brothers. Living abroad is fun, but being away from your family is far less so. Please appreciate your own families.

 Aside from that, I’ve really enjoyed my time here so far! My job keeps me busy. I’m teaching Science to kindergarten and young elementary kids. Here’s to hoping I continue to enjoy it?

Before I left, I wanted to try to find a Korean restaurant with my family to let them taste the delicious food I would soon be able to enjoy every day   This really the only Korean restaurant I could find in Spokane, and it did not disappoint~

2nd day after arriving. Stopped at a Dunkin Donuts while waiting for the check-in time that the hotel (love hotel ) I stayed in. I tried one of the potato donut things and it wasn’t anything special  I love potatoes and this was just like a regular donut!

회식  First day of work was the graduation ceremony/performance for some kindergartners. Basically it entailed me babysitting the ones that weren’t performing and dressing them up in their million costumes. Yes. They had at least 5 costume changes each and it was ridiculous. But cute.

We got a new…head teacher? I guess that is what her position is. I like her a lot, and she gave me instant coffee that wasn’t sweet the 2nd day of work. Good in my books! And bottom is Eve! The (infamous? to me she is haha) Eve who helped me get the job. She is amazingly relaxed and chill and I don’t want to scare anyone (i.e., her) but I love working with her so much. I also really like the other two foreign teachers, Megan & Robinson, I just don’t have a picture of them to show off. Aherm.

Gratuitous Keunseok mini-spam ahead. “Explored” part of Suwon with clubs (mostly night clubs, which are different than regular clubs?), bars, etc. We found a good 전집 and had ourselves some 해물파전.

Random triva: I stayed in Busan the first time I went to Korea. Obviously I ate jeon there, but it’s (sometimes? frequently? my bf is strange and calls it this?) called jijim. For like, a year I went around confusing all my in-America Korean friends telling them jijim is one of my favorite Korean foods.

1st we had regular makkeolli (forgive my bad romanization), then we had rice-water makkeolli. The rice one was good for a while then just became too sweet.

 해물파전 I like this jeon best because Keunseok can still eat meat, and seafood is easy to pick out so I can avoid it. & I can make regular jeon at home. I am cheap enough to avoid eating out at places where I can make most of the dishes at home.

My apartment is much more home-y than it was when I arrived, but it still has some work to do. When I feel it’s acceptable, of course I will share it here. If I can take a picture of it, when do I not blog about it

Tomorrow 9:30am I take off to Seattle, then 1pm I am off to Korea~ I finished packing a few hours ago. I only had my one large suit case and a smaller suitcase Keunseok left behind  The other bag I used to use is nowhere to be seen! It turned out alright, I suppose, I still managed to cram in 40lbs of stuff into the smaller bag, but I ended up leaving behind a 1/3 of the clothes I wanted to take.

Anyway! Packed and ready to go. It seems surreal that I’m leaving for work this time. Partly because I’m not a student anymore and also because this time it seems more permanent about leaving. That I have something resembling a “life plan”. Am I old enough for this

My last weekend here Emily came over from the west side to visit. One evening we met up with a couple of people from our high school. I haven’t really hung out with anyone from my high school aside from 3 or 4 people, so this was interesting It wasn’t bad, and I had fun, and for only having 3 real bars my hometown wasn’t bad to “go out” in~ haha

The last bar we went to wouldn’t serve me drinks because my license is still vertical instead of horizontal. In the US, if it’s vertical it’s assumed you got it before you were 21/you are 21. I renewed my license 1 month before I turned 21, but at the time didn’t know it would still be vertical when I got it back . But whatever, you can look at my birth date and see that I’m 22! We left there ASAP, of course 

Welp, see you guys in a day or two when I’m in Korea! Keunseok is awesome and will have my phone re-activated by the time I land, so follow me on twitter if you don’t mind my mindless tweets 

Anyway, Lauren and Gene came and visited me these past two days and brought the cord~

I am going to miss them so much! I met them my first year at university, and I think they are some of the few people I can be around 24/7   I keep trying to remember that even though I will miss them, I’m lucky to have friends that I can miss this much

 Emily is going to be visiting me this weekend  She is working at AmeriCorps on the other side of the state, so it has been hard to see her.

So Lauren usually has problems with getting her picture taken 9/10 times she is making a face! I think she concentrates so hard on NOT making a face, that by the time the picture is taking she is laughing~ got a good here though!   

My dad, me, my aunt and my uncle. My uncle has been visiting from Alaska these past few weeks. He took us out to a fancy steakhouse for dinner, so I just ate a beet salad and all of the side dishes

The moment I quit working I wanted to buy a million nail polishes  Of course I held back and just got these. 

The Sally Hanson is SO transparent It is good if you want an ombre/gradient, but takes a good 3 coats by itself. The Essie polishes are BRILLIANT Not Just a Pretty Face is such a perfect soft pink, and the Sequisn Sash is a transparent top coat sort of thing I heard Essie was specially formulated to be used on real nails and I believe it It lasts longer than average without chipping~ And of course, OPI is always great. I just love browns and greens.

I AM IN LOVE I bought a brown matte colour in Korea from Missa and ended up tossing it out It dried awkwardly and looked bad! I was so disappointed. Then I found this top coat and knew I had to have it.  So~ easy to turn any regular polish into a matte colour by just using ONE top coat of this!

Two things I didn’t expect to buy, but knew I “had” to when I saw them The dolman button-up I kept coming back to, then finally tried it on and found the cut to be perfect for me The button on the back did it  And the wedges were only $9 at Target  The soles are rubber so they don’t click! I love that! Heels, I love you, but I don’t like clicking when I walk

One of Teedo’s nails had split up to the nail bed! We were going to take him to the vet anyway, but one night he let out a yelp and then was limping on the paw for the rest of the evening. I came home from work the next day to find him with that little green cast on~

Apparently Teedo got an infection in his nail, so he needed surgery. The little guy even has medication he needs to take! Though now he is recovering, but can’t rest his full weight on his paw. Apparently this infected-toenail problem is common amoungst bulldogs. However, they did say he was very healthy otherwise

Thursday was my last day of work  The last hour of my shift was spent working with my boss, Christine  She was always so fun to work with, it was a little sad when I finally left  I even received a little bag of coffee and three tubes of  Maybelline Baby Lips  as a gift  She knew my favorite shade I had bought myself was Peach Kiss, so she got me one of those along with Peppermint and Pink Me. Peppermint is amazing for a plain lip balm

This week I am down in the Tri-cities once again, visiting my friends. La~zy week

Say hello to my Kindle Touch

Keunseok got it for me for Christmas! I got it early (beginning of December) and am SO in love. I’m not one of those people who cares about having a real book in my hands. WHATEVER as long as I can READ I’m satisfied So this Kindle is perrrfect for me! I can buy English books overseas and never have to worry about my transporting all the books I buy! HUGE deal when you try to pack only your clothes & makeup/hair things into once suit case.

The Kindle Touch I got is the one with advertisments. It was about $100. I also don’t care about the ads. (I am a hardcore “I don’t care” type of person for a lot of things  but wait until I get worked up about something……  ) It was cheaper and it works the same. Anyway, I have a case for my Kindle, so I can’t see the ads when it is off, anyway. (Case from my mom as an Xmas gift )

I was a bad kid and snuck my Kindle into work and read it when there are no customers about I hid it behind the till and make the font large and it looks like I’m nodding off or sleeping standing off

One last thing~ :3star: On the 21st was the 900th day anniversary  for Keunseok & me as well as his 28th birthday !! 

As you may (or may not) have noticed, I got new glasses Now that I’ve found out my glasses can look good if I get over-sized frames (eyes still look buggy though ) I’ve turned into a glasses person. Or maybe I’m just lazy Whatever~ I still wear my round brown pair as well as these new ones. Going to start a collection of glasses to wear with all outfits

Related to nothing, Skyrim  Don’t currently have my own system to play it on, so over winterbreak I played it on Connor’s Xbox.   I won’t ramble on, but it is amazing. I also played  Batman: Arkham City  recently and the game play is different than what I’m used to, but it’s GOOD different & REALLY cool to watch

Back in November-ish I was able to interview (over Skype) for a teaching job in Suwon. That’s right outside of Seoul and closer to where Keunseok works. While I wasn’t completely expecting to get the job, I was really hoping I would. A woman on Tumblr who let me know about it (thank you, Eve! ) and she vouched for the company. Along with that, I would be teaching science & art to kindergardeners & 1st graders. Two amazing subjects and I am one of those crazies that LOVES kids that age You guys probably see where this is going: I got the job !!!!  Now I am waiting for paperwork to finish processing. It is just a waiting game at this point. I have my ticket for the 24th of February and am trying to not think about what will happen if I can’t get my visa before then.

So of course this means I also graduated! Asian-Pacific Studies with a minor in Chinese  Getting my diploma is an accomplishment in and of itself. But I won’t go there, because the process is done and I have that piece of paper.

Driving to the Kennewick at the beginning of January to visit Gene, Lauren, Elisabeth & Donny~ Donny is teaching in Japan (actually he’s a coordinator for one of the companies there b/c his Japanese is so good  ). I hadn’t seen him for almost 2 years, I think  The drive is about 3hrs from my house; I listened to podcasts on the way there instead of music, as I usually do. 

Making sugar cookies  As per usual while staying with Lauren & Gene, we didn’t do anything to exciting But it was relaxing, watching TV, playing video games, board games and just chatting I miss my friends a lot and hadn’t seen them since this summer. I’m going to go down to hang out with Lauren & Gene again in about two weeks (Donny is back in Japan, Elisabeth back on the coast of Washington  ).

Pencil skirts are very flattering on me. Uh, from the side, anyway. I’m short so when I don’t wear heels, well…you see. Otherwise, it’s very nice on my butt

Ok that’s all for now~ I’m quitting my job in 2 weeks, so after that hopefully I’ll go back to being able to show off my nail art and talk about how nice it is to not wear my all-black uniform 

I wish I had more time! These days I’m busy with school, work, job hunting and completing a project for one of my scholarships. It wouldn’t be bad, but work takes up the majority of that time. I’m not happy with it, but my boss can’t help it. It’s not the job itself, just all the time it takes from me when I don’t need all those hours.

The weather here is basically winter-weather. I woke up to a bit of snow that had finally stuck on the ground. If I didn’t have to drive in so much snow and didn’t get cold really easily, I’d probably be able to appreciate it more

Not making promises about how much I’ll be able to blog until I’m done with school (less than a month left!), but I do miss it! :drops: There isn’t anything exciting going on in my life, but I like interacting with you guys a lot. I don’t even have much time to comment on other blogs.
